Inside
Entering from the villa’s front door, you pass directly into a spacious living room set under the soaring cathedral-like conical roof built from stone recovered from an ancient trullo. To your left is an elegant study area and two master bedrooms, each with their own bathrooms plus outdoor showers set in private garden areas. In the other wing of the house you will find a kitchen equipped to the highest professional standards set too under its own towering cone. Beyond is a television room with the comfiest of ‘squofas’ on which to curl up and watch everything Sky has to offer. Two more bedrooms are set beyond, the second of which has another bedroom set in the roof of the cone, as was the ancient tradition of Puglian trullo living. These bedrooms share a fabulous bathroom, with a tub in the style of Ancient Rome big enough for two or more.
Outside
Villa Katerina is set in about 6 acres of completely private land, made up of wild flower-filled meadows, about 70 two hundred year old olive trees and virgin oak and scrub woodland. Completely private, you are surrounded by glorious farmland and olive groves as far as the eye can see, interspersed in the distance with white trullo cones. Nestled in this perfect and unspoiled landscape, the house is as extensive outside as it is within. A twenty five metre lap pool is designed to resemble a seashore, with pebble and rock beaches plus, of course, room for loungers. The outdoor kitchen with barbeque and sink is set next to a vast glass and teak dining table with a shaded seating area enjoying gentle breezes and glorious views.
Exploring the Area
The house is set in the much sought-after Valle d’Itria, and land of rolling hills, olive groves, vineyards, and dark red soils surrounded by ancient dry stone walls. At the four points of the compass are the captivating white-painted hill towns of Ostuni, Ceglie Messapica, Cisternino and Martina Franca, each with its own style and personality. This part of Puglia can plausibly claim the best food in Italy. There are six Michelin starred restaurants within a 30 minute radius, and those are arguably not the best in the area. There is a choice of beaches on the Adriatic and Ionian coasts, one about 25 minutes away, the other perhaps 40. Neither coastline is developed with hotels, nor will you find sardine-style rows of sunbeds as elsewhere in Italy. Instead, you will enjoy beachside restaurants and bars, sand dunes and the clearest water in the country. For the energetic, Lecce is a glorious Baroque town, dubbed the ‘Florence of the South,’ Egnazia is an important archaeological site from Roman times and earlier, and exquisite medieval cathedrals and castles from the Crusader period and before line the coast.
